Question:

We have some old bikes. Where would be a good place to recycle/donate them?

We have about 4 (maybe more) bikes that we want to get rid of. They are not in the best condition. The brakes and gears on my bike don't work, and the other three bikes, their brakes are very squeaky. They are just plain old. Which is the reason why I think we would be better off recycling them, rather than donating them because they are in just decent condition.

I've been searching online, and I'm not sure where we could recycle them, or donate them. I live in Michigan, just outside of Detroit.

Could anyone help me find a place to recycle or donate them somewhere in my area? I would really appreciate it!

  1. I suggest you try the Freecycle sites. Its a site that people advertise what they want to give away and people will respond weather they want it or not.Its a recycling site hence the name

    Freecycle.com

(type in your city's name and freecycle.com

    ie:Detroitfreecycle.com

Good luck and thanks for recycling

  2. Freecycle is good.

I would also suggest using eBay or craiglist. There are always people looking for bikes to salvage (me included :P )

  3. In my area Idaho, all the local bike shops get together for a charity called bikes to kids.  They donate time and parts to get bikes in running order for needy kids.  Try calling your local bike shops and asking if such a program exists, our police dept. is also involved( they donate all the stolen bike-that no one claims) If that doesn't work maybe be a humanitarian and start a bike drive yourself for the kids!  All else fails you could try metal recyclers. Good Luck!

  4. Check out www.freecycle.org  It lists free stuff within your area with the goal of keeping usable items out of the landfills.

  5. check with your local bike shop, for info on  local charities who will fix the bikes up and distribute them. or leave them out front, with a "free bikes" sign. if you really think they should get recycled, call local scrap yards that deal in recycling different metals. use the landfill as an absolute last resort.
