  2. Gitmo was ceded to the United States by Spain after the Spanish-American War. Cuba back then was a colony of Spain.

    The current government in Havana doesn't like it, but lives with the fact.

Our lease on the base at Guantanamo Bay dates back to 1903.  The lease is permanent unless both governments agree to break it.  The current Cuban government argues that the lease is illegal under international law, but their legal argument isn't completely sound and no party would have the power to eject the United States even if it were.

  6. The base is left over from a war we started to have with Cuba back in the 60's  It was 61 or 62, call the "Bay of pigs".  A few years before that we were all friendly with Cuba and the money flowed in and out of the casino's like it does today in Vegas, only to the Mob Bosses.  

    We never gave back the base, is the short end of the story.

  9. It originated during the Spanish-American War in 1898 and the treaty we signed with the Spanish following the conflict. Guantanomo Bay is considered sovereign US territory.

  11. There is a border there where Cuba ends where U. S. protected territory begins.  

    The United States has territories or "protectorate" states all over the world and that part of Cuba is just one of many.  

    A strategic location for the United States logistically speaking.
