We have the talent to turn over Australia – http://www.senore.com/Cricket/GC-Wilson-c1474 – Cricket News Update
Ireland's wicketkeeper batsman, Gary Wilson, said on Friday that they have the firepower in their squad required to outclass the world number one ODI side, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746, when the two outfits clash in a one-off One Day International, at Belfast, Stormont
on Saturday.
Speaking to media reporters ahead of Saturday’s match, Wilson said that gone are the days when Ireland used to play exhibition games against world’s top ranked sides.
"We believe we have the talent in this squad to turn over the No 1 one-day side in the world," said the 26-year-old, who keeps wickets for English county, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Surrey-c851 in county cricket.
"The stage is long gone when a game between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 and Australia is an exhibition match. It is an official one-day international and we are going out to win the game,” the wicketkeeper batsman warned the on-tour opposition.
The Associate nation has enjoyed some stunning success in the recent years, which saw them defeating http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 in 2007 and 2011 Cricket World Cups, and Wilson feels the current lot is well capable of emulating those dazzling performances,
and pulling off a shock victory over Michael Clarke-led Australia side, come the weekend.
"Look at the make-up of our side. We now have eight players playing county cricket, week in week out," said the
Dundonald-born right-handed batsman, who has so far played 37 One Day Internationals for Ireland, scoring runs at an average of 28.84 and hitting one century and six half centuries.
Among the players who are coming into Saturday’s match with county experience, is the hard-hitting Kevin O’Brien, who last year ripped apart the English attack, hitting the World Cup’s fastest century, off just 50 deliveries.
Though upbeat about Ireland’s talent, Wilson is also not taking the opposition easy and is well aware of the Aussies threat. However, he reiterated that, "Whatever side Australia put out, it's going to be a good one but I still believe we have the
resources to beat them."
The two teams have played each other twice in an ODI in the past, with Australia returning successful at both the occasions.
