We keep data on pollution per capita and per country. Does anyone track pollution per unit of production?

The USA is called the world's greatest polluter. But it doesn't make sense to compare the U.S. to, say, Bangla Desh in terms of tons of pollution per capita or in the aggregate, because the USA produces so much more in terms of GNP and GDP. I would be interested in seeing data on tons of pollution per dollar of wealth produced. I'm guessing that the USA would fare much better, but I don't know if anyone keeps that kind of data.

  1. taking into account also the respective efforts of countries also based on national circumstances:

    Also very interesting:

Here you see the GDP per emissions:

  2. Take the per capita value and multiply it by the population and divide it by GNP. Simple, isn't? Anyone can do it!

But, if the pollution increases the ocean temperature and it releases its Carbon Dioxide in solution and, also, the solid Methane at the bottom (20 times worse than CO2 per pound) then we and all the fish will die.

Should we divide by all life killed, only by humans killed or only by the price of good produced, you know, GNP?

What is important to you? Divide by the number that matters to you, personally.

  3. Why would anyone keep such data? All it would do is to make the US look good -- can't have that.
