  1. Bacchus, Iacchus, Dionysus, etc was the god of wine and orgies.

    Violence was also involved.

    The early writer Herakleitus also mentions phallic worship.

  3. The Ancient Greeks valued reason above all things.  They considered unadulterated "animalistic" behavior disgusting.  Bacchus, by virtue of his drunkenness, his association with Silenus, and the prominence of women in his worship, offended many Athenians.

    Hopefully we've learned a few things since then, but not many.  American society still tries to control or eliminate (rather than to accommodate) the behavior which Bacchus symbolizes or encourages precisely because we find it threatening and "disgusting".
