We left garbage over the weekend and now our garbage has smelled up the apartment/hall. What can we do?

Ok, So we went away for the weekend and left garbage by accident. We've since taken it out but you can smell it in the apartment and in the hall. What can we do?

I've got a great answer for you, from experience: One day I had a garbage bag leak onto our garage floor. Covered the spill area with clumping kitty litter for an 1 hour, then swept it off and covered again overnight. No more smell + minimal fuss.

If it's carpet, this will be more intensive. But kitty litty soaks up smelly liquids and is cheap.

Open doors and windows and air it out.  Then burn a few matches.  They do a good job on smelly air.  Boil some water with spices or vanilla in it.  When it gets to smelling better, turn off the stove and close up all the doors and windows.
