  1. Put it at least 6 feet up ,and preferably against the trunk of a tree so the bird can cling to the tree as it feeds.You can buy suet feeders just for Pileateds,or you can hang suet in a mesh onion bag.They also like nuts,especially pecans.

  2. About as high as you would place any other bird feeder.  Place it on the side of a tree, give them a variety of seeds, and I'm sure that they'll notice it.
