I should have mentioned. Our mother tongue is Hindi. My daughter does speak and understand English and recognizes English alphabets and small words. She understands and speaks little hindi too but does not recognize hindi alphabets.

  1. I don't feel books are necesary.

Just speak to her in hindi and show her objects around the house and tell her the names.  Since she cannot read yet, (I assume that) and since the hindi alphabet is different from English what is the point of books so soon?

  2. Can she even read English yet?

The first stage in the order of learning a language is listening to it. Let her hear you speak it around her and to her and she'll pick up words and phrases more commonly used in conversation, rather than relying on more artificial lingo found often in print text. This also gives her a chance to hear the natural intonations used in the language. You can move onto teaching her to read and write the language when she's a bit older- like maybe 7 or 8.
