We haven't used the truck in a while, and now, of course the keys are not where we thought we left them. How do we go about replacing them? We bought this truck used from a used car lot not a dealership, Would we just need to go to any Chevrolet dealership with the registration to get a replacement? Thanks

  1. yes if your truck is newer than96, take the title and proof of id to a dealer an usually for less than 20$ they will make you one. Some dealers are more helpfull than others.  Ken

  2. get the Vin and registration, proof of who you are and they can make new keys for you.  i had to do this with my chevrolet last year b/c the keys were wearing to the point that noone could make a new one that worked off the original.

  3. This happened to me once.

It cost me the price of one tow truck visit ($50) with CAA.

They send out a lock-smith who will jimmy your door open, remove the lock from the door, removed the tumblers from the lock and cut you a new set of keys.

Perhaps if your truck is quite new, it may be more complicated than this (fancy computer chip keys, etc...)

  4. you may be shocked at price..i don't know where they get the 20 or 50 dollar price...most newer cars have chip in key...my friends 90s ford explorer cost 225 dollars. and foreign cars are in the 400 to 500 range...i am not kidding..call ahead to dealer and locksmith..

  5. yes if its not to old

but your keys are in the left side of the couch

  6. You can go to the dealership but it will be more expensive. Try looking for key shops that can cut programable keys.  They'll run you about 50/ key, you will need to get the truck's lock cylinders replaced.   That will be the more expensive part.  Alltogether you are looking at $200 for the two doors and the ignition.  If your truck doesn't have a programmable key (the key is 100 % metal, no plastic head) It may be a little cheaper.

  7. lock smith

  8. Go to a Chevy dealer, bring the registration. Be sure your VIN is on the regi. The VIN is where the dashboard meets the windshield on the driver's side. If you have AAA coverage, call them, they will make a key at no charge. If it's a newer vehicle with a computer chip in the key, the dealer is the best route.

  9. In addition, look thru the windshield on the drivers side for the vehicle identification number and mark that down if it is not on the sheet.   Hopefully you still have original doorhandles/ignition.   Take all that down to the dealer and present to them.   They will do you proud.
