we got our jack russell terrier back in 2006 and we've had a massive problem with shedding for the whole time. the fur gets stuck in our carpets and doesnt get picked up by the vacuum cleaner. only if we pick it off by hand. anyway, my mum has allowed it now since its too late to fix it, we've been living in the same flat for 15 years and we want to move. if we do move, we're going to find a pet friendly apartment but my mum wants to find a place with a balcony to put the dog because she doesnt want the massive problem with shedding in our possible new house. what else can we do?

i bought a furminator and brush him every few days, i give him high quality food with lots of nutrients and oils for a lovely coat and i take him out for walks everyday. yet he still sheds like crazy

i even bought him a jumper for winter days to keep him warm and to keep the fur on him. help??

  1. Between living on a balcony and not walking him everyday, you will be torturing your dog, and you are going to make him aggressive. Either tell your mother to walk him also and let him in the flat, or rehome him. Needs come before wants, your dog needs to walk and needs to be inside, your mother just wants a clean apartment.

  2. Number 1 he won't adjust to living on the balcony,he always been an indoors dog-HE's developed no cold protection

Number 2 living on the balcony is dangerous for any dog especial a jack russell-as they like to jump and will jump easily right over the balcony & like end up dead!

Number 3; Jack russell do need to have some time to run around

Number 4, Would could consider rehoming him, if you moved?   In your case, it might be the best & fairest option

Since your saying it VCE, i'm guessing your in Victoria australia. I do happen to know a shelter that keep animals for a long period even though there technically a kill shelter. I've seen dogs and cat rehomed heaps later- a cat called lotus was there for approx 9month-came in December 5  07+ I seen other animals there a long time. Not all shelter put them down in 2 weeks.  RSPCA put them down in 36 day if not rehomed in that period, so that why I am recommending the other shelter

There are also vaccum for pet hair-so you might want to have look. There an animal adoption centre in Pet at home & i notice the other day i was there they had a vacuum for pet hair.

  3. have a doggy house outside and those dogs all ways shed lods so don't worry about it. WHAT EVER YOU DO DON'T GIVE IT TO THE POUND BECAUSE A FEW MWEEKS LATER IT WOULD BE ON DEATH STRIKE. SO IF YOU HAVE TO GIVE IT AWAY DO IT YOUR SELF AND SEE IF THE NEW OWNER IAPPROPRIATEAT  FOR THE DOG AND ISNT CRUEL.

  4. Is it possible that your new home can have tile or hardwood floors? We put tile in our house, and only the bedrooms have carpet at this time.  She might need a vacuum cleaner with more power to help with the hair issue. I would look for a house with hardwood floors.  Good luck

  5. You work part time and go to school.

I can understand that. You need to manage your time bette though.

Brush him daily. Maybe 2x a day and start now. Once in the mornin, once in the evening.

And maybe get a better vaccum. My carpet is blue and my orange cats turn it orange with their fur, but my vaccuum picks it all up...

  6. In all honesty, I would consider it animal cruelty to have him on the balcony 24/7 with no daily long walks. If your mother isn't budging, I would start looking for a new home for him if I were you.
