Question:

We need alternative energy sources/solutions. Should hydrogen/fuel cells be one of them?

Is it worth it for the government to invest in the hydrogen market, or can science already show that it is a dead-end as far as reducing our dependance on oil and reducing overall emissions?

  1. Most scientists beleive its the next big thing

  2. Hydrogen would be a way to dump electricity that is in excess to demand. Thus if we have large volume nuclear reactors that we must keep running at maximum output, we can see using the momentary excess power to create hydrogen, either to power the grid when the grid needs more than the reactors can produce, or to power vehicles.

Basically this says, it would be better to create hydrogen than simply dumping the power, as in heating up a lake.

This would assume that we have first shut down all generation that uses fossil fuel, all hydro using water from above a controllable dam.

Before choosing to make hydrogen to power the grid later, we would want to have pumped water back up over those controllable hydro dams.

We would also want to have ensured that we have smart electric panels that use up excess electrical power rather than waiting to morning.

There may be much improvement in hydrogen technology, and we need not close the door on it just yet. But we would have to see it work first.

There are patents issued that make hydrogen production an order of magnitude more economical, on paper at least.

  3. We have not found a way to make hydrogen without costing more than the fossil fuel it took to make it, just like ethanol. The exception is using ACM's look up CoolingEarth.org for more information

  4. I don't know if I want a hydrogen fuel cell in my car. What if I get rear ended? It's like a hydrogen bomb on wheels. Something I can live longer without.

  5. But But But

can u all think fist before use these!

The hydrogen combine with o2 will form water.

cCan these will change the world too?

like o2 combine with hydrocarbon or petroleum produce carbon dioxide.

    It change the world!

  6. yeah it would be expensive to go hydrogen fuel cell but there are already hydrogen fuel cell stations and cars out. everything is expensive when it first comes out because of supply?... anyway, your question asked about viable alt fuel source, hydrogen is, and its emission is hydrogen (which combines with oxygen in the air to form water). if they both cost the same per gallon yet one has no harmful emissions... which would you prefer to use? (aside from the cost to form the ethanol etc which like another poster said can be done with excess power from nuclear power plants)
