Question:

We need to come up with an "o-ring" for a motorcycle carburetor. Is this possible?

The item is for a float chamber on a carburetor. It is no longer manufactured or available anywhere (at least not on any English websites). It looks like a gasket -it's rubber but not circular like I thought o-rings always were. The old one is not broken, but it's very warn, frayed, and dirty. What is the best way to replace this? And what options should I avoid?

  1. What model/make?

If it's semi-modern or modern, try www.bikebandit.com  You might get lucky.

Chances are, for an antique, there is someone out there who loves that bike and has resources to help you.  Check out the web for listserves and groups for your make/model.

  2. For future reference, always give year, make, engine size and model #  when asking questions. We need all of that info to give an informed answer.

Someone may have known where to get that particular part, or even had an extra in their garage laying around.

If it will still fit in the groove, you can try to fill in the groove with silicon sealant along with the o-ring and also cut out and use a paper gasket.

  3. is it for the float valve(needle n seat?) if so, you can make one out of thin gasket material. very easy to make and ive done it before with good results

  4. Look on mcmaster carr and geta closest you can find and make your own.

  5. Buy a sheet of gasket material, trace the outline of your old gasket onto the new and cut.

I've done this more than once, EZ.

Get the stuff from a parts store that has an old guy behind the counter.
