  1. It always done with creosote in the past, but with the environmental concerns, that has probably changed. Just ask at the supply store.  


  2. I have heard some people pour old engine oil on the railroad ties to help preserve them.

    You could also buy the roofing tar by the 5-gallon buckets.

  3. If they are real, old RR ties, they were soaked in creosote, it's an oil/tar thing.  I'm not possitive, but I recall it only being commercially available, as in, we can't buy it

  4. If you are referring to real RR ties, they are covered in creosote. This is a very nasty, toxic chemical, and I'm not certain you can buy it any longer. It was available in the 1980's in 5 gal buckets for home use, but I haven't seen it lately.

    If you're talking about the pressure treated landscape ties, that chemical is not available for home use.
