We overheard our neighbors planning to rob us, what to do?!

My husband and I live in a duplex with my husband's best friend. A few months ago some new neighbors moved in to the neighboring duplex and they've been nothing but trouble. Long story short - first there was a noise problem so we let the landlords know and it got quieter but now our front yard is now their dog's toilet. Secondly, they've been messing with our cars. My husband just bought a used audi which he loves, and one of the little panels that houses the wiring is missing, then our cds got stolen from his car and our roommate saw the guy take the cds and run, then, there was a loud slam of the neighbor's front door and a loud crash. We called the cops, since our roommate didn't get a good look at the guy, the cops couldn't do anything. My husband went to the landlords to put in our notice (we're moving in about a month) and to complain about what's been going on with the neighbors. Our basement walls are paper thin and we can hear everything through them, my roommate is chilling in the basement at about 3 am and he hears the neighbors planning to rob us. They know the specs on our computers, it sounds like they've been in our house before. Our roommate freaks out because he's by himself, my husband and I are out of town for the weekend. He calls the cops but they say they can't do anything. Anyway, I'm freaked out, I don't know what to do. It's easy to break in through the windows so even if the doors are locked, they can get in. I'm not willing to put up the money for a security system since we're moving. I know this is a ton of info, but I'm scared and I don't know what my next step should be.

  1. well since you don't want a security system, get a huge safe. and put everything valuable in it. If they are new neighbors make them so cookies to bring over and casually bring it up, buy saying stuff like yeah i'd be care full in this neighborhood someone robbed our car, and try to squeeze it out of them.

But also be careful because they might have a gun.

  2. Tell everyone you got a security system (even if you didn't).  Go to the local animal shelter and get yourself a little yappy dog that will bark whenever the miscreants come close.  Box up everything important and stow it away somewhere safe.  And invest in some mace or something, in case the creeps really are dangerous.

  3. Are you sure you are on the up and up. Police say they can't do anything?  Where the heck do you live? You sound like you have crappy officers around there.

  4. Go to the police again - it's not your fault that you have unruly neighbours and you certainly shouldn't be scared about living in your own home. Also tell your landlord, and move out as soon as possible (see if you can go earlier). If you have to keep paying your rent until the end of the month, then, if you're willing too and are able, move to stay with a friend until you can move into your new home.

I'm sorry to hear about this, but it really shouldn't be happening. You have you speak to the police.

    Good luck!

  5. pity u!

i was about to suggest u to have a security system but then u said that u're moving..

so, this is what i think...ask that guy to take everything which is considered precious..and be somewhere else until the morning came..preferably at police station!

trust me...police wont ask him to go back since they know the risk if he's home! [and since the police cant do anything]

  6. Wow - that's quite a situation.  I would go to the local police precinct and tell them in detail what happened.  If they are unwilling or unable to help, then box up all of your belongings except the bare essentials (you've got to box them up since you're moving) and move everything of value to either a friends house temporarily or to a self-storage unit.  Move everything of value out of your cars, too. See if you can stay with a friend until you move out.  Ask your new landlord if there is any way you can move in earlier.  Even a few days would help.

If you have to stay in your place, replace the locks on the door, and make your apartment as secure as you can - leave windows closed and locked, etc.

I know this is not an ideal situation, but neither is living in fear of getting robbed.  Good luck to you - Julie
