“We play it clean!” says the FIVB
Yes you heard it right. “We play it clean!” is the new slogan of the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB). Like every other sport governing body, the FIVB has been very keen to make Volleyball and Beach Volleyball drugs
free games. The FIVB has a special Anti-Doping board, which is responsible for making sure that players do not use any performance enhancing drugs.
Recently the mega-event of the FIVB Women’s World Championship 2010 completed its run in Japan. The anti-doping campaign was attended by 24 teams from around the world. The FIVB was set the challenging task of collecting samples
from all the players in attendance. The samples were taken and the FIVB had the pleasure of announcing that all athletes, who participated in the 16th edition of the Women’s World Championship, were clean.
The samples were collected from random players during the matches. At least one player was selected randomly for Anti-Doping sample at every match during the World Championship. In addition, it was necessary for every athlete at
the World Championship to obtain a “We play it Clean!” certificate from the FIVB beforehand. In this regard, the FIVB has different online Anti-Doping education programs, which teach players about the use of safe substances. Anti-Doping certificates are issued
after the successful completion of an online course.
The Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) has lately added a new section on the website. It offers all the related information that is helpful for players to avoid prohibited substances. Moreover, it has all the up-to-date
information about Volleyball and Beach Volleyball medical issues. In the medical section of the website, you can find relevant information on various doping issues. The new section is surely an apt addition to the website.
In 2010, a total of 114 samples were taken. Around 64 samples were collected during the competitions, while the rest of the samples were taken outside of the competition. Only one athlete was found to have used a prohibited substance
but the player had already obtained a valid certificate for medical reasons. The athlete had a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE)*.
On the whole, the FIVB is proud to reveal the Anti-Doping results at the end of the World Championship. It is big honour for the FIVB that it has maintained the international standards of Anti-Doping. The Federation hopes to keep
the same reputation in the coming future.
*N.B. A TUE is usually issued for banned substances but it is only granted by providing a solid reason that the player would suffer major health problems without taking the prohibited substance.
