“We put ourselves in a decent position,” Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland
Detroit Tigers' manager Jim Leyland is quite happy for his team’s late effort in which they ousted the New York Yankees 2-1 and took the commanding 3-0 position in 2012 Major League Baseball American League Championship Series on Tuesday, October 16 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan.
"We put ourselves in a decent position, but that's all we have done, Normally, I guess you don't take Secretariat out in the final furlong, but that was pretty much it for him," Tigers' manager Jim Leyland said after the game and explained his team’s overall combined effort which provided them a three game cushion in ALCS.
Tigers’ starting pitcher Justin Verlander was the key player who helped Detroit overthrow the New York Yankees with bitter humiliation.
Justin Verlander pitched 8.1 innings and allowed one run and three hits. He struck-out three and remained calm on the mound for his entire spell.
"I have seen a lot of teams shuffle around a lot of lineups when I am out there, so it doesn't really faze me one way or the other if those guys are in there or not, I just need to come up with the game plan to face the certain guys that I am going to face. I was surprised, but that's Girardi's decision, not mine," Verlander said on his performance which literally outclassed the New York Yankees in Game 3 of their seven-match encounter.
Along with Verlander, the Detroit Tigers' closer Phil Coke also played well and finished with great force. Phil Coke pitched 0.2 innings and received two hits. He struck-out one and pitched with great accuracy.
Tigers' batting offence also did well on the plate and scored some crucial runs. Left fielder Quintin Berry scored one run and smashed one hit on three at-bats. He showed great temperament and maintained his slugging percentage at .375.
Designated hitter Delmon Young also did well on the plate as he added one run and smashed one hit along with one RBI on his three at-bats. He showed his true class on his .846 slugging percentage.
