  1. "Witch"?

This is an impractical idea. "Yes" and "No" are completely vital, as are directions (at least left and right), references to temperature (hot, cold), requests for assistance (help!) warnings of danger, descriptions of objects, and so on.

I think perhaps 170 words might get you through a slow day, but if you were going to work, buy things, navigate, communicate with your spouse and kids (either to educate or procreate), you'd need plenty more. Here's an interesting article on the subject of "how many words do men and women use per day", btw. Amongst other things.

  16. This is a novel proposition to the mind indeed. I think I would be happier to be able to get along in France, for instance, with my use of only few words of French, with merely a smattering of Japanese in Japan, in China, Russia and Arabia with only the top seven entries of Chinese, Russian and Arabic dictionary, but what the question is what those seven words for each language, or for all, possible be? The one question that alone would require volumes of books to be written, and countless channels of discussion to be engaged in endless sessions of debate, for the purpose of deciding on the chosen words.

And then even if we did come up with the answer the difference in our understanding of our language would make it difficult for us to get the meanings of the word equivalents in other languages. I for instance might assume that I know what ‘hunger’ is, what ‘poverty’, and ‘deprivation’, but would I really know what does it mean to pick and gather grains of wheat from dust, to live under and open sky and to be deprived of my right for education just because I had to go to work in stead.

I would not take words from people for any reason, as many of us already have just a few, and the rest are lost for their meanings where life goes beyond the limits of what can be said and make easy for others to understand. I would like to hear people speak, and shout to the heavens above and to the blind chaotic caverns of existence, for an answer, with all their might and with all the words that they can think.
