since this is the myth section I'm going to whip out Hector's quote from the Iliad which was basically -

'the best omen is to fight for your country'  - said after some of his troops saw a bird and weren't sure whether the gods were telling them good or bad things about the attack they were making on their enemies' lines.

Luck, if there is such a thing, is fickle and unreliable.  If it comes, it comes - if not and that's what you're counting on, you're kinda stuck, aren't you?
