gas causes air pullution but yet electricity does too because the power plants put smoke and gasses in the air. So what should we do?

  1. Alternate energy sources like wind, solar and using sea wave power to reduce dependence on gas and coal.

  2. We should stop doing anything that produces gas.  So stop breathing?

  3. Electric power can be supplied from renewable sources such as solar, wind, and water.  Another option is nuclear.  If you're talking about cars, even when they get their electricity purely from coal-burning power plants they produce less carbon dioxide emissions than burning gasoline:

ICE = gasoline car (internal combustion engine)

HEV = hybrid gas-electric car (uses gasoline to recharge batteries)

EV = electric vehicle (plugs in to recharge batteries)

EVs reduce CO2 by 11%-100% compared with ICEs and by 24%-54% compared with HEVs, and significantly reduce all other greenhouse gas emissions, using the U.S. grid

mix. If all U.S. cars were EVs, we’d reduce global warming emissions. Using electricity strictly from coal, EVs still would reduce CO2 by 0%-59% compared with ICEs (one analysis found 0% change; six others found reductions of 17%-59%) and might produce 30%-49% more CO2 than HEVs (based on only two analyses). On the other hand, if electricity comes from solar or wind power, EVs eliminate all emissions.  Using natural gas to make electricity, emissions fall in between those from coal and renewable power.

  4. There are quite a few ways to reduce pollution at coal fired power stations these are called clean coal technologies

There are also many ways to make electricity with a lot less to near zero emissions. Hydro, Wind, solar, tidal, geothermic etc.

The latest generation electric cars charged by standard coal fired power station only emit pollution almost equivalent to hybrid vehicles. If charge from green sources almost zero.

There is of course nuclear power that emits almost zero green house gasses. While this does promise to solve problems it comes with other baggage that most of us do not want. I refer to it as "The mother in law solution". (While it may solve the problem I really don't want to live with it.) Maybe we will have too though.

Cleaning up coal and nuclear power are only medium term solutions as neither is renewed quickly enough.

Personally I am a keen cyclist and would encourage as many people as possible to ride. The health and fiscal benefits are an added bonus. Most people are surprised by what distances and speeds they can achieve with a little effort. (It is quite enjoyable also). While it won't supply all your transport needs it can do a large chunk.

  5. Well... you could buy a horse.

  6. Most, if not all the electric power plants should be converted to produce electricity using reneweable resources so that they can do so without pollution.

  7. pedal power

  8. Definitly not ethanol either. So, pretty much bicycling, ricshaw or horse-and-buggy. Ah, the good old days.
