Question:

We subsidize oil companies with tax breaks, why can't we do the same with hybrid car manufacturers?

'm just curious. We give billion of dollars in tax breaks to big oil companies and it helps keep the price of oil down (or so I'm told).

Why don't we give the same tax breaks to auto manufacturers building hybrid cars? Seeing as the auto manufacturing industry is hurting so much already, it couldn't hurt. And wouldn't that even create some new jobs?

  1. They do subsidize hybrid cars, duhh, lol.

Bush has put more money into alternative energy than any other president. More than all others combined, and it wasn't a congressional idea, it was Bush's budget, his administrations idea.

The subsidies for oil companies go to their seeking oil, which they spend a lot on, and which we benefit from. Had those subsidies not been in place the oil companies couldn't have found and developed what they did. High oil prices are recent, and there was a time they were at $10 a barrel, and oil companies were in the red. They have things going in many countries, and even put out all the money to develop oil fields in the middle east, and Venezuela who just kicked them out.

Don't forget who oil companies are. They are your parents investments.Your grand parents retirement accounts. Your retirement accounts. They are investments the workers of the country count on. Big Oil is all of us, vilified by the democrats because they have always looked to vilify something or someone dishonestly, because it gets them votes.

  2. Cause we got greasy people like oil-baron Bush  and his Cheney henchmen to force us to subsidize their pet commodities that they make so much money from.

  3. Because by God!  Neither needs a tax break.  Give the middle class a frigging tax break for once.

  4. They do it on the other end.  There was (not sure there still is) a tax credit for purchasing a hybrid or electric car, meaning you could just subtract $2,000 from your tax bill because you were nice enough to buy a hybrid.  That's better than just giving money to Toyota or Chevrolet.

  5. the reason that oil companies recieve tax breaks is to make america an attractive place for oil buisnesses. the same is true for car manufacturing. the difference is in the tarriffs on foriegn oil compared to the absence of a tarriff (due in a large part to nafta) that is the reason car companies have been not able to compete.

  6. We do

  7. Because that won't do anything to further enrich the oil companies, and with this administration and the Republican party, who can still block legislation, it's all about the oil companies.

  8. Maybe do a bit of research and find out that car companies who produce hybrids do get major tax breaks.
