Question:

We want to improve our local park...?

We just had some new playground equipment installed about a year ago. We have 2 shelter houses, one just having been rebuilt about a month ago. We are talking to city officials tonight about painting and improving the basketball court. We also want to plant some native wildflowers down near the lake....any other ideas that you can think of to make our park a great place for all ages?

  1. A tennis court or baseball field would be great, and maybe a bike path that goes around it if it's big enough.

If it's a smaller park, nice, clean benches that are painted and look sturdy. Maybe a little shelter or canopy from rain or intense sun where people can sit and picnic and have lunch.

A drinking fountain and a public trash bin would be a good idea.

Maybe have local grade schools or middle schools get involved with planting flowers -maybe find a few classrooms that are learning about plants at the time and try to integrate designing a pretty garden.

It'd be a great idea to plant flowers but buy flowers that will live for a few years and bloom every year, so that the city doesn't have to replant every year.

Magnolia trees would be gorgeous, with a dirt trail to walk around them and a bench to sit on. *sigh* That would be my dream park.

  2. i am biased, being a dog person, i suggest a dog park

  3. Oh, I love working on community parks! Here are a few ideas:

A butterfly garden in addition to the other gardens.

Walk, bike, skate, wheel chair, and/or stroller paths. Paths can be  wide and straight, or meandering with lots of branches.

A field or grassy area for running games and kite flying.

Animal habitats; like bird houses, snags near bushes, bat boxes, etc.

A small band stand or stage.

A small fountain or water feature.

Sculptures; especially the kind people can sit or climb on.

Raised sandboxes, on different levels, that can be used by small kids, bigger kids, and kids in wheel chairs.

Raised garden beds...maybe even a community garden where people can grow seasonal produce. For example, water melons for summer, pumpkins for fall. Organic gardens are not all that hard to do.

    Have fun!
