My mum sisters and I want to start a really simple catering company, that delivers great home cooked food. We aren't qualified chefs, however my sister and I are currently managers at a really big restaurant chain.

What guidelines do we need to meet and follow?

  1. This will depend on where you are.

Contact your local council because you will need to know if you are allowed to run a business from your home, if that is what you intend to do.

Local councils are also often responsible fro administration of public health laws, and they will therefore be able to issue the appropriate food manufacturing certifications or permits, and arrange for you premises to be inspected.

Make sure that you get insurance - without it, one lawsuit when someone eats a dodgy dinner, and you could lose your house.

On a financial note - make a business plan.  It is all well and good to start a business, only to find you work like a dog and make less than an Afghani rugmaker!
