Put a baited live trap out there and find out. You will at lest catch the culprit and dispose of the problem to how ever you see fit.

You got some free fertilizer put it on the plants and throw some sand over it .

If it is really important you can send it to a laboratory and have it analized

and check your garage for holes

It sounds very similar to what we had going in and out of our garage at one time....it was a family of racoons. Be careful looking for them, we had to have a professional trapper  come in and take care of our problem. Racoons can carry rabbies and if they have babies are very dangerous.

Probably is a cat if that's what it smells like. Make sure everything is locked up tight and openings that a animal could get into.

get a professional trapper in - he'll identify it & set up traps also show you where they are getting in so you can repair.

Is it old or newish? Either way it could be a stray cat that was getting in or had been in there in the past if it is old...other animals could be possum, raccoon but I highly doubt that.
