We were not outplayed in ODIs – http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DPMD-Jayawardene-c1397 – Cricket News Update
Despite losing the five-match ODI series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 with a 1-4 margin, the Sri Lankan skipper, Mahela Jayawardene, has insisted that his side was not outplayed in the series and they fought well, he rued the missed opportunities though.
Speaking to media persons after his side’s 39-run loss to India in the one-off T20 at Pallekele, the middle order batsman said that he did not consider the ODI series as a complete failure, adding that his side was not that bad in the series as the 1-4 scoreline
reveals.
"I don't think we were outplayed in the ODI series, I thought we played some good cricket,” said the home skipper at the post-match press conference on Tuesday night.
"We had our opportunities but unfortunately, we didn't take them…while the scoreline will show 4-1 in the ODI series, I think the series was a lot closer than that," Jayawardene maintained.
Going into the India series at the back of an impressive show against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 – winning comprehensively the ODI and Test series, while drawing the two-match T20 series 1-1 – the Islanders looked completely out of sorts in all of their games against the
World Champions, barring nine-wicket win in the second ODI at Hambantota. Both their batting as well as their bowling failed against the rampaging World Champs.
Jayawardene was, however, extremely disappointed by his team’s 39-run defeat in the only T20 last night.
“Today, yes, we didn't play to our potential and were well beaten,” said the Sri Lankan skipper of his side’s disappointing T20 performance. "It was very disappointing, the way we lost... we didn't execute our game plan well at all," he added further.
After restricting the visitors to 155 for three in their stipulated 20 overs, the Sri Lankan batting line-up, especially the lower order, collapsed miserably, as the whole team was bundled out in 18 overs for just 116. Angelo Mathews’ 29-ball 31 was the
only notable performance from the Sri Lankan batsmen.
The Islanders now look to the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 Premier League (SLPL), commencing on August 11, would provide his side a good platform to prepare for the mega event.
