Question:

We will be traveling from Cannes to Paris, where is a quaint village to stay in the french countryside?

We are looking for a small village or town rather than a city to stay around Lyon between Cannes & Beaune then from the Beaune Gilly area we will travel to Paris - - not interested in going into a city. We would like to experience a little of the outskirts countryside flavor but not too far off the beaten path. Any suggestions?

  1. I stayed in a lovely area of France, very tranquil and there are many lovely little towns around the place, and they have a very medieval feel.

We were based in a rural area (I was "house sitting" a homestay...which was really lovely) near the town of Figiac (its most famous resident was the man who desiphered the Rosetta stone, of which there is a large copy), this is in the Lot/Dordogne.

We saw a lot of truely stunning places.  My picks are

Rocamadour (its a chruch/village literally coming out of the rock on a steep face of a hill...it is the site of St Amadour...well worth looking into),  Stunning views.

St cirq lapopie (its signs you enter the village says its one of frances pretties towns!) very quaint, neat buildings and a great lookout to see the Lot river passing by the area.

I will comment that there are lots of people there at times, but into the surrounding countryside its lovely seeing.

Autoire. A little village on rolling hills, just lovely and much quieter.

Cahor (has a nice medieval bridge), good sized town with some interesting buildings.

There are lots of castles and other numerous villages around the place.  I would really recommend it as a place to visit

  4. Hi Sue,

A lot depends on which route you are planning to take.

We have done the route from Cannes up through Gap.  Very beautiful through there.  If you went this direction you will be traveling in the French Alps.  About 6 hours drive south of Paris is a town called "Annecy".  Really really nice town, sometimes referred to as 'little Venice'.  It is built on a lake (Lac Annecy) and has a canal running through the center of town.  Lots of little cafés in this area, a chocolate shop, they also have their own château (castle) in town and a good market as well.  I highly recommend it!

Have a fun time whatever you choose to do.

  5. vezelay, france is one of the most beautiful places i've ever been. it really is a quaint little village.  if you go, make sure you go to the abbey and go around back, and look down (you'll be on a hill) breathtaking. its very close to paris, maybe an hour or less south-west-ish.
