  1. There are currently two practical means of desalination - distillation and reverse osmosis.

Both methods tend to be slow. Distillation is simple but uses a lot of heat (either electrical or fuel) or else takes a really long time if you use solar distillation.

RO takes much less power, but requires high tech equipment that can be expensive to install and maintain, especially if you want more than about 5 gallons per day.

For my money, I'd go with the RO system

A water softener does not desalinate the water. It can remove calcium, iron, and other minerals, but it cannot remove salt.

  2. If you live in a warm sunny area you could use a solar still to evaporate the water from the briny solution and then condense it again. This doesn't produce a high volume of water but running costs are low. (Some set up costs though)

More expensively you could replumb parts of your house with something that won't be corroded by the salt, and use the water unpurified to flush toilets, separating this supply from your drinking supply. (Providing there aren't regulations or concerns preventing the water going into the sewage.)

  3. There are many water softener on the market. When they take out the salt it softens it.
