What does playing weak side mean? Doesn't it mean you can hit just not as good as others. I mean , why was I chosen this position? I heard it's for the weaker players or something?

  1. It's not that your a weaker player .... Sometimes it has 2 do with height too, if ur not as tall as the other girl in the other postion then its probably that... But if u are as tall the coach just feels the other girl is more comfortable on the other side. If u work @ it though u will develop a stronger skill and play in the position u want!! good luck :>

  2. r u left handed???? cause its usually a left handed person

  3. Beaker has  a great answer.

I still prefer to call it right side and left side.  If you have a lefty in that position, it is confusing.  If you tell a righty to go to the strong side and you tell the lefty to go to the weak side, they will go to the same spot on the left side.  Another reason is your concern.  You are playing the weak side and you think you are a weak player.  It is not correct.  Your position is important.

It is called weakside because the ball has to cross your body for you to spike it.  It is your strong side if the ball does not cross your body.  Many people struggle learning how to hit the weak side hit.

If you are on the strong side, your approach should be at an angle, nearly 45 degrees.  Your approach should be from off the court.

Since you are on the weak side, your approach should straight at the net.  You should not be outside the court.   If you approach straight and want to hit the ball straight, you will hit the line.  (A GREAT shot to learn.)  If you need to turn the shot, you will be able to turn your body and make the shot go cross court.  If you approach from an angle from outside the court, your straight hit will be cross court.  When you turn your body to go around the block, your shot will be further cross court.  And usually out.  Most blockers will block you cross court since that is the most common shot.  If you learn to hit that line shot, you will be a star.

  4. The right side hitter (weak side) is just as important as any other position on the court.  You are blocking the opponent's stronger hitters and you are the back up setter if the setter can't get to the second ball or is the one that passes it.  It's calld weak side because typically a right anded person can't get the same approach on the right side and therefore the hits are not as strong as from the left. For a left handed person however this is their strong side.

    Hope that helps

  5. not that your weaker..someone is so much stonger and you are part of the team that fits the puzzle that you are smart enuf to play that position

  6. It means most other players will show their weakness at that spot... but you :)

Generally speaking the right side of the front row is not quite easy for some players to approach and deliver a good hit. Only those who got specially trained and showed potential would be assigned to that spot (hopefully I am making you feel better). You have to be smart to take a different approach, and to outplay your opponent who is in her/his "strong side" (you will face more challenge as the shot could get blocked by the most aggressive hitter of your opponent), and to block your opponent's strong-side hitter.

I was an "opposite hitter" (aka weak side hitter) in high school, and got assigned as middle hitter/blocker in college. I was switching with the opposite hitter (our backup setter) from time to time when we called a play.

The benefit of that training to be the weak side hitter is that I am now able to play all kinds of positions, as I know how to act in each of those positions.

So why were you chosen to play this position, 'cause you are smart and you showed your potential that others don't have :)
