Weakened Spanish team still capable of beating the American team in Davis Cup – Tennis News
World number four, Rafael Nadal, is not fully fit to contest in the Spain’s Davis Cup tie against the supreme American squad. The absence of the Spanish hero has definitely weakened their squad and given an opportunity for the well talented and versatile squad of American to register an upset. However, there is no doubt that the four athletes from Spain will give out their best effort on their favourite clay court soil at home.
The Captain of the Spanish squad, Jim Courier talked to the media personnel and commented, “Rafa’s absence is obviously missed for them, but it’s not as devastating considering how deep of a team they are. Spain is the favourite. The preparation is the same for us, no different. It’s all about execution. We’ll take our chances.”
Leading character of the Spanish team, David Ferrer stated, “I just hope to play well and win the point, so that Nicolas can have less pressure when he gets on court.
The number one singles American player, John Isner commented, “Our team has played in some tough environments before and we expect a tough environment tomorrow,” Isner said. “It’s going to be a big challenge, but it’s not going to be anything I’m not used to.”
Mike Bryan also had to say a few words about the tie, “This could be our toughest away tie match.”
Considering the attitude of players, it is expected to be the toughest tie of the season. Both teams are extremely good and capable of beating each other on their day. The home advantage and clay court in play definitely tilts the odds in favour of the Spanish team but the absence of Nadal has definitely balanced out the affect.
Ferrer will have to step up the gear and seeing his recent form, he is expected to win all his round rubber matches to give an outer edge to his squad. Spain is never been beaten at their home for the past 13 years and they are the reigning champions of the tournament as well. The Spanish team has won three of the last four editions of the event contested and they are already in the semi-finals for the fifth consecutive time.
Spanish duo of Marcel Granollers of Feliciano Lopez is one of the toughest team to beat in the world of tennis. However, they are up against the reining US Open Champions but the advantage of playing at the clay courts has definitely enhanced their chances of winning.
