True SELF-weaning before a baby is a year old is very uncommon. In fact, it is unusual for a baby to wean before 18-24 months unless mom is encouraging weaning. However, it is very common to hear a mother say that her baby self-weaned at 9 or 10 months old, or even earlier. How do we reconcile these statements?



What is self-weaning?

A baby who is weaning on his own:

    * is typically well over a year old (more commonly over 2 years)

    * is at the point where he gets most of his nutrition from solids

    * drinks well from a cup

    * cuts down on nursing gradually

Child-led weaning occurs when a child no longer has a need to nurse - nutritionally or emotionally. The solids part should rule out self-weaning in babies under a year since, for optimum health and brain development, babies under a year should be getting most of their nutrition from breastmilk.



What factors might lead mom to think that her baby is self-weaning?

When a mother says that her baby self-weaned before a year, there is a chance that she interpreted a normal developmental stage (perhaps combined with her own wishes) as baby's wish to wean. Low milk supply can also play a part.

In societies where children are allowed to nurse "as long as they want" they usually self-wean, with no arguments or emotional trauma, between 3 and 4 years of age. This interest also stemmed from the realization that other animals have "natural" ages of weaning, around 8 weeks for dogs, 8-12 months for horses, etc. Presumably these animals don't have cultural beliefs about when it would be appropriate

Do not stress the baby will not take your b***s or the bottle to kindergarten. they are only little once.  There is no rush despite what EVERYONE says so please do it when you are ready and the baby!!!!

I dont think you should let your baby wean before age 2.  if you feel like your baby is not wanting the breast and hes less than two, its probably just a phase n will go away.  be patient and continue bf

There are different definitions of "wean".  One is the introduction of solids.  We waited for our son to show initiative and grab food on his own.  He was about 7-8mo.  We skipped baby foods and just fed him small bits from our plates.  He eats almost anything now, but is very fond of spicy black beans, chicken curry, and guacamole.

The more common definition in the US is cessation of breastfeeding.  He's almost 16mo and shows no interest in giving up nursing.  I'm cool with that--he's still just a baby and medical authorities recommend a minimum two years at the breast!

My son weaned himself from the breast at 14 months and he stopped taking a bottle at 8 months.

My daughter stopped using the bottle after about a year. We just gave her a sippy cup around 10 months to play with. Then after a while she used it exclusively and gave her bottle to her "babies."
