Question:

Weaning a baby with milk allergy?

hi. i have a almost 8 week old baby boy. i started off breastfeeding, but after only 11 days he started having blood in his poo. i brought him to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a severe milk protein and milk sugar allergy and had to be put on the prescription formula Neocate LCP, a amino-acid based formula. he is now thriving on the Neocate, but i am seriously worried about the weaning of a baby with such a bad milk allergy, how will i know what is save for him to eat and how can i make tasty foods for him, especially since the neocate tastes horrible, (at least i think so).

also, i always thought that babies could only be alergic to animal milk but not my own, has this happened to anyone else out there?

Marleen

P.s. i know that he can't start on solids until he's 6 months old, in case you're worried!

  1. I don't think everyone got what you were asking : )

When you wean him onto solids, I would wait until AT LEAST 6 months, since he has the history of allergies to both milk protein and sugar.  When you start him on solids, you won't have any worries when he is on straight vegetables or fruits.  Be careful if you use commercial stage 2 fruit type deserts, they often contain milk products.  When he is old enough to be eating, I would consult with a dietitian, they would be a wonderful source to work with.

The good news is most babies with this problem tend to outgrow it.

Here is a good website listing common foods with casein in them, and words that mean milk to avoid.

  2. My 6 month old son was allergic to my breast milk, he would throw up everything he drank like waterfalls.  It was hard to wean him, but he got use to the bottle after a while and he's been doing good now.  I'm not too sure if this answered your question but it's not very hard.

  3. If i were you i would find a website that specifically deals with this kind of things, other mums will be able to help you, i wouldn't ask on here as it's probably a rare thing and you wouldn't want any bad advice from people who really don't know what they're talking about!! Good luck xx

Try medhelp.org!! They are very good and have forums about everything!!

  4. hi, it was probably down to what you were eating that the baby was allergic to, but you will find as you go what things the baby can have. good luck ok?

  5. Its always going to be trial and error with this sort of thing.  My daughter hated milk and simply refused to eat it after four months.

She had juices and pureed food.  We gave her yoghurts and what have you and hoped for the best.  We made soups and pureed them, and pureed potatoes and vegetables and chicken which she ate from a spoon from the age of 12 weeks.  But sooooo much water and juice.

Her feeding regime balanced out as she got older.  Now she is 6ft 1 inch, built like a pencil and is athletic and sporty.  So the non eating of milk didnt do her any harm.  What I am trying to say is dont panic - do as much research as you can - take from it what you feel is right, and you will have to, as I said before, do trial and error to find what suits.

Dont panic.  They are far more resilient than you would believe.

  6. First... congrats on a new baby. Second... always talk to his pediatrician, they will know what is best.
