Question:

Weaning a kitten, spaying the mom.

We took in a pregnant cat and she gave birth 10 weeks and 2 days ago. All but one of her kittens have been placed in good homes. They all eat solid food but whenever we let the mother interact with the kitten we still have she lets it nurse. I feel bad separating them completely but how do I keep her from nursing on the sly. She has an apt on Tuesday of this coming week and except for 15 seconds of nursing she hasnt nursed since the 27. I really want her spayed as soon as possible. Any suggestions besides separating them completely?

  1. Hi Sarah,

If mom still wanted to nurse, you shouldn't stop her. She will let you know when she no longer wants to. Also, spaying her will not eliminate her milk production and she can still nurse once she is spayed. So, there really isn't a need to separate them. Sometimes, kittens nurse of mom because they feel protected, secure and it's a kind of comforting thing for them. As long as mom allows it, it is very good for their wellbeing.

  2. Hello, I have the same situation as you, we recently took in a pregnant cat who gave birth in May, she still feeds her kittens when they are near, and the only reason she continues doing so is because she is a good mother, and so is yours for still nursing. I'm pretty sure it would not hurt her, if so I can't amagine her being in critical condition because she is still feeding.

    Good luck.
