I am weaning and would like to know how I can deal with my leaking, sore b*****s without stimulating my supply. What I've been doing is hand expressing into a bottle until the leaking stops. Is that okay? What else can I do?

  1. I used a sports bra with the pads or on other days cabbage. if you express any milk you will continue to produce. but if you are only taking away a little at a time just reduce the feedings and not express any of the milk during that time.

  2. That's fine. I used to take a cool shower to help with the pain. You can take tylenol or some other pain med for the pain. Wear a tighter fitting and underwire bra. And I have also heard that sticking cold cabbage leaves in your bra help with the drying up.

  3. When i weaned my baby off due to having to go back to work i started the week before and only nursed him in the mornings and at night and maybe once during the day.  I never had problems with leaking though.  They did hurt but that only lasted a couple days.  Gradually weaning is the best i think.

  4. Each time you are hand expressing into a bottle until the leaking stops - you are stimulating your supply. I know it is absolutely painful (in my opinion, when I stopped breastfeeding - that hurt more than giving birth!) ... but you can't do anything. No hand expressing your milk, no pumping, nothing. You will be VERY sore for about 7-10 days. My suggestion... since you aren't nursing - you can take medication again! ... try some OTC pain relievers (I didn't use any, but it is an option). Also - cold compresses (don't use hot as this can cause your milk to release) .. and colder showers. Avoid heat as much as possible. Wearing a snug bra (such as a sports bra) can help keep you supported and reduce your pain some during this time. Even wear it at bedtime, and try to sleep on your back as much as possible. I know it hurts, but the pain will eventually subside and you'll be feeling fine again before you know it. Also - wear nursing pads.

  5. in order for it to stop, you cannot do anything, not even just a little to release the pressure because then your body will still see that as demand. You can put a tight sports bra on and if it gets really sore and engorged use cold cabbage leaves in your bra. It should stop swelling after a few days.
