i moved to my new home about 6 months ago up until then my cats were indoor cats as i lived on a 5th floor - once we moved they started going out

ive not been letting my cats out at the moment until the kittens are gone and they have been spayed - but after that i really would like to do away with the litter trey altogether, how do i make sure that they don't start havin accidents??

  1. Once they start going out they should start to use the litter tray a lot less

  2. i think you could try encouraging the cats to go out more wants the kittens have gone.my cat uses a tray and rarely goes out, but on the occasions he does go out he seems not to use the tray anywhere near as much...i guess cats must prefer going outside to do their business anyway.

  3. Start moving the litter tray nearer and nearer the back door or wherever the cats will be going in and out. Eventually leave the trays outside and then (if they still haven't got the message) start filling them with earth from the garden instead of litter, they should catch on then. Good luck!

  4. They will probably just start to use it less and less after you start letting them out. We got our first cat when we were living in a flat and kept her in for about 2 years. Then we moved to the house, got a cat flap put in and started letting her out and within 2 weeks she just stopped using the litter tray.

I have this to come again in a few weeks after Marley has had his op and we start letting him out too!!!

  5. Gradually move the litter tray closer to the garden door and when it is at the door, remove it altogether.  Make sure that your cats can get out into the garden easily by installing a cat flap if you have not already got one.  In the meantime you will have to put them out regularly once the litter tray has gone.

  6. When they start to go outside they will probably want to do their business out there to get their scent on it.

If not, gradually move the litter tray towards the door, then out the door when they are out. If you have a cat flap, put it outside all the time.

Show the cats it, so they know its there, and don't change the litter directly before putting it out, so it will still smell like them.

When the cats are used to going outside you can do away with the litter tray and they will find somewhere else to bury it!
