  1. Weaning is usually done when they are 6 to 8 months.. depending on the horse and if it had any problems at birth ?,,

The norm is late 6 months,,,,

    I will..NOT DO It,UNTIL then,,

    No ,MATTER WHAT

Only if the mare rejects the colt .

This is where many people have a problem with ,,it they want to do it to early /////Arabian People  do it all the time ""

to early they may develop some problems because their Mom was not there to tell them right from wrong and to interact with each other. and the other mares and colts  they are with E,T,C

If done to late the mare will have a very strong attachment to her colt and may never want to leave it ,,

It has to be done the right way ,, and as easy for both ,,

And to  have other colts that have been weaned at the same time ,,they will forget about Mom when they have other..

their own age to play with !!

I have been doing this for the top farms in Calif, and

sometimes a maiden mare,, does Not want to leave her baby ..

If you have been on GOOD breeding farms,, they have a great system

and No stress on the mare or her colts ..Thats the way it should be done

I star you great question ,,,

  2. If you are talking about a colt, then no later than the age of 6 months, because otherwise, the colt will start exhibiting stallion behavior, and may cause the mare to reject him. Fillies can be weaned at this same age as well, and in fact, they should be. Keep in mind that puberty in horses starts at the age of 8 to 10 months for colts, and 12 to 15 months for fillies. This is why colts and fillies need to be separated at weaning- because otherwise, you risk indiscriminate breeding, and the possibility of ending up with a filly in foal as a yearling. Colts need to go with other colts, and fillies need to be with other fillies.

    Hope that helps.
