So i was at a picnic over the weekend and ran into my aunt's new husband. I found out he is a martial artist who trained Tang soo do to 3rd degree and Hapkido to 2nd degree. We were chatting for a few minutes and he pulls out these (not sure about the spelling) Musari chains (pronounced moo-sar-ee). He started explaining how they work and demonstrated a few moves on me. He got pulled away shortly after and I never really got a chance to grill him for the particulars about them. Where did they originate? What style of martial arts would he have learned them from?

  1. Are you talking about a Manriki-Gusari chain? It's a japanese chain weapon (probably used in korean martial arts too though) that has two weights on each end for striking, snaring, trapping, or strangling an opponent. They are thrown at point on the opponent's body and can catch them by surprise. Seeing that he was trained in hapkido, he can probably use it for aid in grappling. Hope this helps
