Here in Canada, single-shot handguns, sport rifles and shotguns are permitted so long as you have them registered, although whether you can carry them with you in public I don't know. More advanced weapons such as fully automatic weapons, high-powered sniper rifles or explosive-projectile weapons are prohibited for civilians to own as far as I know. I think you can own and use compressed-air weapons without even having a license. I'm not sure how knives and other melee weapons are treated by law, it probably depends on the type of weapon (a pen knife is permissible, but a samurai sword might not be). Tasers are probably also forbidden for civilian use, and if the police caught you with any kind of weird experimental weapon not specifically covered by law (something like a beam weapon or mass driver), you could still get in trouble if the weapon is dangerous enough.
