Question:

Wearing big boy underwear for two weeks, doing great until today???

It's just now 11:00, and he's had four accidents so far today. It's making me crazy! But I'm trying hard to keep my cool because I don't want him to feel really discouraged or get upset. He seems to just be forgetting to go when he needs to go. Anyone have any words of encouragement for me?

  1. I'd put a pull up on him the first time he wets during the day. Tell him that if he wants to go to the bathroom like a baby, he can wear a diaper. Make him keep the pull-up dry for a set amount of time before he gets "big boy underwear" back.

  2. Don't worry, everyone gets potty trained eventually. I was a full time nanny and worked with a two year old who was potty training. It may help to have someone your son looks up to and admires (like an older boy) say, " Hey, big boys use the potty! You're a big boy right?" Believe it or not, the parents of the kids I was in charge of could not figure out why their son kept "forgetting" to use the potty, but the day after I said that to him he only had occasional accidents at night because he wanted to be like the big boys and for some reason wasn't as worried about disappointing his parents as he was his "friend" (me). It might sound harsh but sometimes you do have to be firm and remind him that only small babies still use the bathroom in their undies.

  3. He's a toddler and accidents happen. Just let him get on with it. He will. Try to anticipate his need. After meals, after nap sometimes just getting him use to a routine helps.
