im a guest at a wedding this weekend. i plan on wearing a 'simple' black dress. its sleeveless, but NOT spaghetti straps. its cut a little above the knees. from the waist down, the dress is pleated.

i think the dress is cute, but is it appropriate to wear balck to a wedding??? i was going to dress up the outfit with a pair of gold shoes & gold accessories. simple hair & make up.

P.S. i found out the colors for the bridal party dresses are white & black.

HELP! i dont want to look like a fool...

  1. its superstitious but it is considered bad luck for the marriage for a guest to wear black to a wedding.

Then again, my grandmother wore black to my parents wedding and they've been together for 27 years now.

Its not as frowned upon as it once was.  Especially for an evening wedding, which is usually more formal.  I say go in what you feel comfortable, or, for that matter, whatever you think you look good in.

  2. The only inappropriate color for a wedding guest is white.  Black is acceptable unless you're going to look like someone in the wedding party or if the family might find it strange.  Gold accessories is a good choice, but if you have jewelry and a purse that adds somewhat more color, that would work too.

I remember an episode of the Golden Girls where Blanche puts on her wedding dress which is fire engine red.  A short time ago that might have been shocking, but today even that would be OK for a guest.

  3. Black is always classy.  That is the one color you cannot go wrong with.  Plus aren't most weddings the beginning of the end?  : )

  4. It would only be rude if you were the bride. You might want to make sure it's not too similar to the wedding party, but other than that, go ahead.
