Question:

Wearing your retainer?

My orthodontist told me to wear my retainer 24/7 for 6 months, however I've only been wearing it for about 5 during the day, and then wearing it when I go to bed. I usually wear them for a total of 13 hours per day. Will this cause my teeth to shift a lot, or no?

  1. nopeeee

  2. Wear it for at least 13-14 hours per day minimum. You may end up needing to wear it longer if you can't leave it in all day.

  3. your teeth will shift even after the 6 month period. You need to wear them atleast everynight. Thats what i do. I have been sleeping with them for 2 years. They do shift through out the day though so yeah. It is normal for the teeth to shift just make sure you pop that retainer back in at night and by the next morning its another journey lol

  4. My orthodontist just told me to start wearing my retainer at night only but before i wore it 24/7 and he could tell when i wasn't. I really wanted my teeth to get fixed quickly so i did wear it every day all day cause i wanted to be done with my treatment faster, and it worked. If you wear it 5 hours a day it don't think it will shift very much, because they need to be on constantly so that the teeth can actually move. It will take a while for them to actually take effect, so you should try to keep them on as much as you can.

    Good luck.

  5. Yep, wear it as much as possible.

  6. YES! they'll move, your teeth will remember how they were and try to go back.... un less you love how braces feel! for every one its different but in general they'll slowly move!

  7. it could. im supposed to wear mine at night. I havent been doing that, over a few months the space inbetween my teeth came back so. yeah. i would wear it 24/7.

  8. Why do you think your orthodontist told you to wear the retainer?

It's not for HIS benefit.   It is for yours.

  10. Wearing it all day and night will make it less painful if your teeth try to move.  If you only wear it a couple hours your teeth are more likely to move and you have a greater risk of losing your retainers.  After your teeth move it is as painful as it was when your doctor would adjust your wire and bands.  It takes a lot to keep your teeth the way your orthodontist left them.

  11. well wear it every night and as much as possible....trust me if youdon't you'll regret it later..
