Going to Costa Rica in May and just wondering what to expect. I've been told that it would be anywhere from 90-100. We are going to be in the Northern Pacific region. Should I expect rain, humid, etc.

  1. May is the beggining of rainy season for the whole country, but it is not the time of the Heaviest Rainfall which is Sept/Oct and on the Eastern slopes to the Caribbean Dec

Take a rain jacket or poncho for sure. It will most likely be clear and hot all morning and afternoon, but in the later day it is always better to be prepared for rain.

You are pretty safe in the Northern Pacific Region as it is primarily Dry Forest.  As for humidity, it is not really an issue in this area. They experience the least amount of rain for the whole country in Guanacaste (the province of the Northern Pacific.) Here are a few Stats for that region:

    Average temperatures: 22ºC to 28ºC (72ºF to 82ºF) highs in the mid 30’sºC (90’sºF)

Annual rainfall: Between 130 to 230 cm (50 to 90 inches)

    Heaviest rainfall: September and October

Here is a cool link with more info on Guanacaste

I was working in the Southern Pacific last May in dense Rain Forest and every day about 4pm it rained, but i still burned myself really bad around mid day so be careful about that too.  This country is located 8 to 10 degrees north of the equator.

  2. I went to the North west area this last January. It was very hot then. So I can only assume that it will also be hot in May as well. Prepare yourself for a very bumpy ride girl. The pot holes in the rode can be up to 5-6 inches deep. And they are every 4-5 feet. Bring a donut or a pillow. hahaha. Most of the North west also near Tamarindo is like a desert. It is like driving through Arizona. Good Luck.
