Question:

Weather in Cuba (Cayo Coco - Pinar del Rio) during hurricane season?

I'm looking to travel to Cuba, in Cayo Coco, this coming week (Sept. 8).

I'm not worried about the dangers of the hurricanes, I hear Cuba is very well organized to protect it's citizens and tourists. However, I'm worried about the weather. The weather forecast says that it will rain, at least until Tuesday.

What does that mean - does it rain all day? Does it rain for a bit, and then when it's cloudy, there's still lots of sun?

Also, I was looking at the weather forecast for Pinar del Rio, which looked more promising, but apparently Pinar del Rio is more affected by the hurricanes.

So I'm confused... Do you think it would still be enjoyable in Cayo Coco? Or is it better in Pinar del Rio?

  1. Cayo Coco usually will get more of the rain as opposed to the severe effects of the hurricanes.

Pinar del Rio is on the westernly tip....Cayo Coco/Camaguey/Ciego de Avila are in the archipelagos...they will get a lot of rain.

BUT, even during the rainy season, you may get a tropical shower that will last a few minutes in the day...and then it can rain middle of the night while you're sleeping (or about an hour around dinner)...honestly it's not a lot and doesn't interfere with your daily activities. If there hurricane has any effects, the rain may last during a day period and then end quickly and clear up.

It will be still very hot...and there is so much sunshine. When it showers, the sun can still shine as well. It'll just be a welcoming cool down from the heat and then you go back to your regular activities in the hot sun!

I've been to Camaguey and Cayo Coco during hurricane seasons. Did not experience any problems.

There were no damages in Cayo Coco with Hurricane Gustav...whereas Pinar del Rio did suffer the effects. A friend of mine who works at one of the resorts in Cayo Coco (Tryp) did not mention any problems with the hurricane...and she had spoken to me the day of as well.

Cayo Coco is a beautiful area. I don't think you'll have much to worry about.
