Weather not to affect LPGA Tour
Many players and official are confident that weather will not hinder the LPGA season.
LPGA events are underway even as the worst heat wave of the decade is in full swing. The temperatures are edging upward in triple digits.
In such conditions, even the experienced players face difficulties in continuing the game.
Consider the recent Manulife LPGA Classic held in Waterloo, Ontario. Many were expecting that the event would be cancelled given the high temperatures. Some speculate that the management even considered cancelling it all together.
However, the event went ahead as scheduled. There were delays and the first two rounds were difficult for the players but the tournament was a big success.
The players put tremendous effort and braved the weather. Playing under such conditions is not easy for players, nevertheless.
The hot weather slows the players down and significantly affects their performance. Heat stroke is another danger that constantly threatens the players.
Despite the temperature rising up to mid thirties, players, volunteers and the management decided that the event must go on.
Suzann Pettersen from Norway said, “much rather prefer the heat than the cold, but this is a bit warmer than I expected it to be”.
Fans are equally anxious to attend the ongoing Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G, played at the scenic Pinnacle Country Club.
Players are also excited about the event and say that the rising temperature is something they can handle well.
One of the players scheduled to play is Becky Morgan, who comes from Florida. She said, “I think I’ll get tired a lot quicker than normal but we play in heat all the time so it’s just something that we should be used to by now”.
The event managers have taken every precaution to keep the tournaments going smoothly. There are shade zones, where spectators can view the game, while being relatively safe from the hot sun.
At these points, chilled towels are provided for both volunteers and the crowd.
Tracey Carter is one of the fans who plan to attend Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, despite the suffocating heat.
She offered tips on beating the heat and said, “We are drinking lots of water, staying in the shade as much as we can and wearing lots of sunscreen”.
Bottled water is available at all points throughout the course, at all the events. This is something that fans, players and volunteers, all appreciate.
Many tournaments have an official sunscreen provider. This sponsorship is extremely valued by players who have to spend most of time under the sun.
Becky Morgan says, “We have an official sunscreen provider on tour so we get free stuff from them which is great but I try to apply as much as I can because I don’t want to get burnt”.
