Webb Simpson cold shanks it at the BMW Championship
Golf is a very dicey game, it demands tremendous amount of concentration. If you lose your focus even for a second, everything can turn its back towards you, ask Webb Simpson.
All was going well for the US Open Champion until the sixth hole on Friday. Simpson messed up his tee shot big time.
One would never expect to see such a shot from a pro golfer and that too, from someone who holds a major title to his name.
At the par-3 sixth, Simpson miscued his tee shot. The moment the ball flew off the tee, it was nowhere to be seen. It was such an ugly shot that he could not even find the same ball.
In round one at the Crocked Stick Golf Country Club, Simpson shot a mind blowing 8-under 64, which included eight birdies. He birdied last four of his five holes and it seemed that Simpson was on his way to his first title since winning the US Open.
Things, however, turned out otherwise on the second day of the championship. Simpson birdied the second hole and people thought “okay, he is on a roll once again”.
However, things started to deteriorate quickly. He bogeyed the fourth and then shanked it up at six and ended up double bogeying that hole.
From there on, it was a complete decline. He went on to bogey the 7th, 15th and 17th and it was all over for Simpson at the BMW Championship.
A sluggish and sloppy three-over 75 means that he is now eight shots adrift of the leader, Vijay Singh. Singh is chasing his first title on the PGA Tour for the last four years. After shooting two excellent rounds, he has a magnificent chance to end his
drought.
Golf, however, has found a new rivalry in the form of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Both of them have been going neck to neck for the last few tournaments and even at the BMW Championship, they are tied for the second place.
This is good news for the fans, as they now have something to talk and cheer about. McIlroy and Tiger, however, so far have been very friendly towards each other. Even on the course, they are often seen laughing together.
