Webb Simpson continues to impress at the Greenbrier Classic
The 2012 US Open champion, Webb Simpson continued his good run of form and shot 5-under-par 65, on Saturday, to take a two-shot lead, going into the final round on Sunday.
It was the second time in a row that Simpson had a bogey free round. After three rounds, Webb was comfortably sitting at the top of the leaderboard, with a 14-under overall score.
Simpson felt that Tiger Woods’ absence will help most of the players, as they will not feel burdened by his presence. Tiger missed his third cut of the season. This now means that Tiger has a few days to prepare for the upcoming British Open.
Last year at the Greenbrier Classic, Simpson was in an identical situation as he is in now, but he faded under pressure. However, this time around he is determined to make things right.
“I realized shortly after the round that I wanted it so bad that it kind of put more pressure on myself than the pressure I was already feeling,” he said. “So it kind of locked me up a little bit and I was not able to perform like I had been all week”.
Just behind Simpson on the leader board is Troy Kelly, who shot a staggering 62 to end up at 12-under, just two shots adrift of Webb Simpson.
Kelly had a hip problem few years ago, and he had to undergo a surgery to fix that.  Later on, he was diagnosed with arthritis.
Considering that fact that he was struggling not long ago and now he is challenging the likes of Simpson is a big achievement.
"For me to just play this game at a high level, I had to go get it done," Kelly said. Kelly is known for his putting blunders, but this time around, he putted extremely well.
"I have not made a lot of putts pretty much the whole year," Kelly said. "It is just good to see some putts go in. I had fun today".
Whether Simpson erases last year’s dark spot and ends up holding the trophy is yet to be seen. However, many people have been impressed by his performance so far at the Greenbrier Classic.
