Webb Simpson continues to play well in the Wells Fargo Championship – Golf News
The overnight leader Webb Simpson carded a four-under par 68 in the second round of the Wells Fargo Championship at the Quail Hollow Country Club to take the second spot on the leaderboard on Friday, May 4, 2012.
He entered the second round with a shared lead and recorded three birdies on the back nine of the course.
Through the 17 holes he played, he was still in the lead at a 12-under par 53-hole score.
Thereafter, he suffered a bogey on the final hole of the round and settled for one stroke behind Nick Watney, the halfway leader.
Despite ending the round with a bogey, Simpson appeared happy, while commenting that he played another good round at the venue within walking distance of his home.
“I played pretty good today. I couldn't quite make as many putts as I did yesterday, but all in all, it was a really solid day, no bogeys until the last, and through two rounds I'm pretty happy with where I am,” Simpson said.
He also said that the only difference between the first and second round was the lucky shots he made on Thursday.
He said that he made some really good hits during the second round too. However, they did not turn out the way they did in the opening round.
Overall, he and his caddie are making the best use of their experience at the venue course and it seems as if Simpson has full control over his game.
“The good thing we're doing, I think, is not making mental mistakes,” he said. “The two bogeys we've had in two days were not really mental mistakes. If we can do that on the weekend, we should be in good shape”.
In the meantime, Nick Watney surged to the top of the leaderboard after carding a spectacular round of eight-under par. He made a total of seven birdies and an eagle against a lone bogey to take the halfway lead.
Ben Crane was another player who succeeded in recording the same score as Watney did. In addition, he also made seven birdies, one eagle and one bogey. He was tied for the third place at a 10-under par two-round score.
