Webb Simpson misses the World Golf Championships – Bridgestone Invitational
The reigning US Open champion Webb Simpson has confirmed not to participate in the upcoming World Golf Championships – Bridgestone Invitational, scheduled to start from August 2, 2012.
There were a total of 77 players who qualified for the prestigious tournament and Simpson is the only player who did not confirm his participation till the end of the entry deadline.
The field includes each of the top-50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings except him. Therefore, the tournament will feature three of the four reigning major champions this year.
Simpson also missed The Open Championship held last week because of his wife’s pregnancy. According to him, he could have confirmed for the third WGC of the year if his wife had given birth to the couple’s second child.
"The next eight weeks are going to be up in the air,” said Simpson after his victory at the US Open. “We're going to see what we can do".
His wife, Dowd, on the other hand, gave a much better and a realistic answer.
"I don't think he is going to play the British Open just in case I go into labour," she told reporters. "It would make Webb too nervous to hop over the pond and then have to try to get back".
Therefore, he had to skip the third major golf championship of the season and became the first person since Tiger Woods in 2008 to miss a major right after winning one.
Woods missed two major events in regulation after recording his final major title victory so far at the US Open.
Simpson’s wife finally gave to birth to a baby girl, named Willow Grace, on Saturday, July 28, 2012. According to Thomas Parker, Simpson’s agent, both the mother and the child were in perfect health.
Simpson will now spend the whole week with his wife and daughter prior to moving to The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island in South Carolina, where he is scheduled to participate in the PGA Championship.
Despite getting few weeks off before the final major of the year, he is ranked among the hot favourites for a win in the tournament because of his great form on the PGA Tour this year.
