Webb Simpson remains in contention at TPC Scottsdale - Golf News
Webb Simpson, the highest-ranked golfer to participate in the Waste Management Phoenix Open, surged into contention at the Tournament Players Club (TPC) Scottsdale, Arizona.
He finished six-under par 65 to take the second position on the leaderboard at the end of his first round on Thursday, February 2, 2012.
Simpson entered the course with his red-hot-putter to start his frost-delayed round with two consecutive birdies on the first two holes that he played.
He finished off his round in a similar fashion as he started in the morning, two consecutive birdies on the last two holes.
He carded a total of seven birdies and a maiden bogey on par-four sixth prior to the game being suspended in the evening due to bad light.
“That kind of performance gave me a good jump start in the first round,” he said. “Only blemish was at number six. I really didn't feel like I hit a bad shot, I hit a chip that released a lot more than I thought it would. Other than that, it was solid”.
It seemed as if his putter was working for him and made a total of 27 putts. He is now one shot behind Ryan Palmer who shot a superb seven-under par 64 to open.
“The thing that kind of held me in there all day was my putting,” he told the reporters. “I made a bunch of putts, so I'm excited about that. The one on 17 was the longest, maybe 20, 25 feet”.
He also added by saying that he does not care much about his top ranking among the participants. His main focus is to deliver a good game on the course and perform his best.
There are now 42 players who will resume their first round on Friday morning at TPC Scottsdale. Among them, there are a few players who are in contention of the top positions on the leaderboard.
A couple of birdies from their side will give them a lead or second place after the first round.
Phil Mickelson, who missed the cut in last week’s Farmers Insurance Open, finished in a 10-way tie for the 19th position when the game was suspended on Thursday.
