Webb Simpson returns to action at the Travelers Championship
The US Open Champion Webb Simpson has announced his participation in the Travelers Championship, at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, scheduled from Thursday, June 21, 2012.
The golf communities were expecting his withdrawal from the tournament this year, considering the fact that he may take a week off following his win at the Olympic Club last week.
However, he showed his commitment to the tournament and told that he has always liked to be a part of the event since he received the sponsor exemption in 2008.
"I love coming to this town, and I think it's actually going to be good for me to get back in the ropes and play this week," Simpson said.
"It's a great week for me to kind of unwind from the U.S. Open but be able to kind of put my focus elsewhere and kind of get away from just reflecting and thinking about it and put my focus on trying to win this golf tournament".
Simpson performed brilliantly last week by recording a two-under par score each in the final two rounds of the US Open that allowed him to take a one-stroke margin victory over Graeme McDowell and Michael Thompson.
According to him, he did not want to lose his winning form by taking a week off after his maiden major victory. That was the main reason why he confirmed to appear at the River Highlands this year too.
He also told that Zach Johnson gave him some good advice on the phone on how to balance things after the US Open victory.
"I even talked with Zach Johnson yesterday for a few minutes just about what advice he could give me after what he went through winning the Masters," Simpson said.
He is now grouped with the Masters Champion Bubba Watson and PGA Champion Keegan Bradley for the opening two rounds at River Highlands.
In the meantime, the defending champion Fredrik Jacobson has also returned to the field this year.
Jacobson told that he likes to be a part of the event because the players enjoy the easy atmosphere, especially after a tough major championship week.
