Webb Simpson shares the lead after round one of the BMW Championship
The reigning US Open champion Webb Simpson carded a superb eight-under par round of 64, to race into the share of the four-way lead through the opening day, at the BMW Championship, on Thursday, September 6, 2012.
Bo Van Pelt, Rory McIlroy and Graham DeLaet were the other three players, who managed to record the same score for the share of the top spot on the leaderboard.
The American opened with a par after teeing off on the first hole, before picking up his first shot at the par-four second. He followed that up with two more birdies on the eighth and ninth hole for a three-under par score.
His back-nine performance was even better, as he managed to record five birdies, including a run of four straight birdies from 14th hole.
He was on his way to take a one-stroke lead over two legends of the game, Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh.
“It was good. Good, solid golf, no bogeys, which I'm always excited about,” he said. “Got the putter going, made a lot of putts on the back nine, and it was good to get up-and-down for par on the last after not making any bogeys. I didn't want to end with
a bogey, so it was a great start and in good position”.
While talking about the course conditions, he said that the course was set up very well and scoring was easy throughout the day.
“It's definitely scorable,” he explained. “I've never seen that much mud on the ball. The greens held up well, they're rolling great, and we're probably going to have to play it up again tomorrow”.
It was a great start for the 27-year-old Charlotte resident, especially after missing the cuts in two of the last three PGA Tour starts that he made.
He currently lists 19th in the FedEx Cup standings and has a great chance to get into contention for the top position in the rankings.
The winner of this season’s FedEx Cup will be decided at the end of the PGA Tour Playoffs, concluding with the Tour Championship, scheduled from September 20 to 23, 2012.
