Webb Simpson shoots 2-under at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf
The current US Open champion Webb Simpson could only manage a round of two-under at the Port Royal Golf Club in Bermuda in the first round of PGA Grand Slam of Golf.
With just one round to go, Simpson needs to get his act together if he wants to win his maiden title in Bermuda.
Currently, he is trailing the two-time playoff loser, Padraig Harrington, by three shots. Bermuda has proved to be a lucky hunting ground for the Irishman.
He has lost twice in the playoffs at the Port Royal Golf Club. Padraig Harrington is aiming to become the first European to win at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf since 1991, when Ian Woosnam won it in Hawaii.
The US Open champion had a solid opening round but he will need a fast start on Wednesday if he hopes to make it third time unlucky for Harrington.
"I never really got anything going, but you know, solid, I would say, and I need to get off to probably a better start tomorrow to have a chance," he said.
The PGA Grand Slam of Golf is regarded as one of the most exclusive golf tournaments with hefty prize money considering the four man field.
Simpson started the day steadily with six consecutive pars, which were followed by a birdie on the seventh.
However, a bogey on the ninth made it even par for him on the front nine. On the back nine, Webb started off magnificently, with two birdies on the first three holes.
He birdied again on the seventeenth hole but a bogey on the last must have been very upsetting for him.
The quadruple played the round in a very friendly manner. They were all joking around, chatting to each other while playing on the course. This might play in to the Irishman’s advantage, as he loves to play in a friendly manner.
"You know what, every day I play, I always try to make an effort to enjoy the day, talk to my playing partners," Padraig said. "Today it was better than ever. We were all very relaxed out there”.
"Everybody was up for a chat," he added. "Some days you can play with a guy who maybe doesn't want to talk back, so you can keep talking”.
